New Articles by Bunny Vreeland

Hi,
I've managed to pen a few new articles, even an interview or two. For example, you'll want to go to this Bunny Vreeland article to start with. It discusses regression. You know, its interesting to see how often people copy and paste Bunny Vreeland and hypnotherapy related articles into their own blogs, for example here is an article I wrote about Irritable Bowel Syndrome that was copied by someone and placed on their own page. It clearly says Bunny Vreeland, in fact it even has a link to the Bunny Vreeland website, but I've never seen that blog before! :-)

You can read the Bunny Vreeland LinkedIn profile here.

Does this sound like YOU?

Bunny Vreeland is a hypnotherapist serving Oxnard, Ventura, Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Ojai and all of Ventura County California. Bunny Vreeland is a certified hypnotherapist. 2007 Dr. Bunny Vreeland

One of the biggest reasons that people lose motivation to do
anything is that when the going gets tough, when decisions get
hard, when temptations arise, it's natural to focus squarely on
the pain you feel... and quit.

Because reaching massive success always takes sacrifices and a
willingness to endure pain and strain (even if the pain is only
in your mind).

That's why a fair number of people say that when they start
using my hypnotherapy programs for the very first time, they
actually feel or perform worse before they improve.

Why, you ask...

It's because, when the new empowering beliefs, attitudes and
action commands are listened to as directed, those statements
can smack you silly, because they are usually the
polar opposite to what you believe and how you act now. Hey,
my hypnotherapy programs do not waste time pussy-footing around.
They get to the point and press it.

So, there can be some resistance... anxiety that you don't feel
with books, lecture-based audios and seminars.

Why don't you feel anxiety from books, lectures and seminars?

Because most people give up when they feel it. And a book
won't force growth or change on you.

If you need help with any of these challenges, call me
at 805-984-1237. I can help. I am Dr. Bunny Vreeland, board certified, Clinical Hypnotherapist. Please check out my website (www.bunnyvreeland.com) for more information.

Hypnosis has helped thousands, maybe millions of people to reduce Stress.
You can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine or watch TV without seeing or hearing some reference to Stress.
Why all the sudden fuss and fascination?
After all, stress has been around since Adam and Eve were evicted from the Garden of Eden.
Is it because there is much more stress today?
Is it because the nature of contemporary stress is somehow different and more dangerous?
Or is it because scientific research has increasingly confirmed the crucial role stress can play in causing and aggravating different disorders and the diverse mechanisms of actions responsible for mediating its multitudinous effects?
The answer to all of these questions is a very resounding "YES!".
The stress response of the body is somewhat like an airplane readying
for take-off. Virtually all systems (eg, the heart and blood vessels,
the immune system, the lungs, the digestive system, the sensory organs,
and brain) are modified to meet the perceived danger.

We are all under a lot of stress...but healthy people learn techniques to help themselves manage stress. A few minutes of relaxation with self-hypnosis meditation can make you a winner over stress.
America, like many western civilizations, is feeling the impact of global change. The effects of change reach into every crevice of life putting people more and more under pressure. Think about the changes that have taken place in your neighborhood over the past few years…especially since September 11, 2001.

Many people try but find that the avoidance strategies frequently generate more stress rather than reducing it. If you drink alcohol or take drugs to avoid stress you'll end up worse off in the long run.
The perfect antidote to stress is relaxation and meditation...and the perfect form of meditation is hypnosis.
Stress causes the brain waves to increase, which causes a chain reaction of events to cascade in the body. A few of the changes that take place in the body when we experience stress are higher blood pressure, rapid heart beat, tense muscles, rapid and shallow respiration, cold hands and feet and decreased immune function.
When you are stressed it's as though your brain is preparing your body to fight or run away…and it is!
The stressors faced by humans conditioned to a nomadic hunter-gather lifestyle are obviously different to the high-tech lifestyle of today. Our distant ancestors needed responses to stress that would enable them to trigger physical flight or fight responses to the perils and pleasures of hunting.
These types of responses are inappropriate today. If you physically ran away from your workplace whenever things got on top of you then this would not enhance your standing in the organization. Conversely if you punch the boss on the nose when he/she gives you a tough time then the resulting dismissal and assault charges will generate considerably greater levels of stress.
Stress causes strain on the body…and the strain can lead to illness…unless we do something about it...like practice relaxation and meditation with hypnosis.
Stress causes strain on your immune system and that can lead to illness and disease. Many doctors report that up to 90% of people in hospitals are there because of stress…including many types of cancer and heart disease.

The perfect antidote to stress is relaxation…not relaxing with a brew at the pub or relaxing in front of the television…but relaxing the body and slowing the brain waves into the Alpha state with hypnosis.
When we are in the Alpha State the brain waves slow down to 6 to 8 cycles per second. When that happens we are perfectly relaxed! Everything that happens to the body is the opposite of what happens when we are stressed.
In the Alpha State the blood vessels dilate, so the blood pressure goes down. The breathing is slow and deep. The heart rate slows down. The muscles completely relax. In the Alpha State the immune system speeds up…so Alpha is a healing state.
There are only four brain wave states.
Beta…when we are awake…21 to 35 cycles per second.
Alpha…when we are perfectly relaxed and hypnotized…
6 to 8 cycles per second.
Theta…when we are asleep…3 to 5 cycles per second.
Delta…when we are unconscious or in a coma…1 to 3 cycles per second.
Alpha, or hypnosis…the words are interchangeable…is a natural state. It is a fact that we pass from Beta through Alpha every night before we fall asleep. And we pass from Theta-sleep-through Alpha when we awaken in the morning.
Stress is an unavoidable consequence of life. As Hans Selye (who coined the term as it is currently used) noted,
“Without stress, there would be no life.”
However, just as distress can cause disease, it seems plausible that there are good stresses that promote wellness.
Stress is not always necessarily harmful.

Winning a race or election can be just stressful as losing, or more so, but may trigger very different biological responses. Increased stress results in increased productivity -- up to a point.
However, this level differs for each of us. It's very much like the stress on a violin string. Not enough produces a dull, raspy sound.
Too much tension makes a shrill, annoying noise or snaps the string. However, just the right degree can create a magnificent tone. Similarly, we all need to find the proper level of stress that allows us to perform optimally and make melodious music as we go through life.
The body may contain its own best pharmacy.

Good health is more than just the absence of illness.

Rather, it is a very robust state of physical and emotional well-being, that acknowledges the importance and inseparability of mind/body relationships.

Through the use of Hypnotherapy you can learn how to harness stress, so that it can work for you, and make you more productive, rather than self-destructive.

The total relaxation that accompanies hypnosis is a buffer that dissipates the harmful effects of stress…so that you can thrive in spite of the problems and changes life throws at you.

How to Write Effective Affirmations - by Bunny Vreeland

By Bunny Vreeland

According to experts, approximately 80,000 words go through our heads each day. Those 80,000 words determine how we feel, how we behave, what we have, whom we attract into our lives, and who we ultimately become. Simply by changing those words and taking control of them we can control EVERYTHING about our lives.

What kinds of words go though your head every day? What kind of songs do you sing in your mind? What do you really think about when you aren't thinking about much at all? Mark Twain, the great American author once remarked that you couldn't really tell who a person was by reading their autobiography. Our autobiography is really that 80,000 or so words that go through our heads every day. Day after day after day. If we bound those 80,000 words into a book those books would be our autobiography. Why? Because it's those words that program us to be who we are, to do what we do, to have what we have. The way we think creates our reality.

Change the thinking and the reality changes.

In other words, negative thinking produces negative results. Positive thinking produces positive results. Random thinking produces random results. You always are thinking so you might as well be in charge of the thinking and think about what you want in your life.

The key rule is this: What you think about comes about. The principle is that we tend to get just what we focus on. Focus on poverty, focus on depression and unhappiness—well, then you are bound to be poor, depressed and unhappy. On the other hand, focus on success and health and happiness and you’ll be rich and happy and healthy.

Affirmations are a way of focusing your mind on what you want and taking your mind off what you don't want. An affirmation is a mind programming prescription for desired results.

An affirmation is a method of thinking or speaking to one's self with a purpose. The purpose is to cause the subconscious mind to bring into one's life that which you truly desire.

Affirmations need to be worded in the correct manner to have the desired effect. As a rule of thumb, affirmations should always be in the first person, present tense and each word should be positive. You will be more successful with affirmations by using these principles:

1. Always write affirmations in the first person. This means using "I" rather than "you”. Always write affirmations using the present tense. This means using "am" rather than "will". Always make every word positive. Always write with the goal in mind. What are you moving toward? What do you want to accomplish? Make your affirmations simple.

2. Make your affirmations believable.

Make your affirmations measurable (if possible).

For example here is an incorrect wording of an affirmation:
You are not going to fail.
You will not lose.

Here is a correct wording of the same affirmation:
I am a success.
I am a winner.

Here is an even better example of an affirmation that helped a 26-handicap golfer get to a 12 handicap.
I am a smooth, relaxed, confident golfer with a 12 handicap.

How to use affirmations.
Use affirmations during self-hypnosis or during meditation, use them often when doing repetitive or rhythmical tasks such as washing the dishes, mowing the lawn, or walking. Use them when you are bored, use them when you catch yourself thinking negativity. Simply repeat them over and over.

One important tip: to make your affirmations work even better, visualize them being effective and feel the emotions you would actually feel as if they were already accomplished.

Can you Relieve Stress Through Hypnosis? - Bunny Vreeland

Bunny Vreeland asks, "Can you Relieve Stress Through Hypnosis?"

Have you ever thought about that?

Stress is something we all complain about and something that every human feels at various times and yet a definition of stress alludes us. Although there are plenty of definitions around, one of the most useful is: "Stress is any change to which you must adjust."

We may think of stressful situations as being negative; like an illness, a death of a loved one, getting fired from your job, flunking school, a divorce, as some examples. But there are situations commonly thought of as positive that produce stress as well; like moving into a new home, getting a promotion, going away to college, getting married.

Stress can come from external and internal sources. It may come from the environment, or from the body and/or the thoughts and emotions.

Hypnosis, or rather self-hypnosis, is useful in teaching to you reduce stress. And there are other techniques such as nutrition, time management, assertiveness training, autogenics, visualization, meditation, breathing, job stress management and biofeedback can be used to help reduce the stress. You can also go to my website for a free ‘Reduce Stress’ session.

Let me ask you;

Do you ever get the feeling that your brain is on ‘overload’ that you just couldn't think another thought?

That your brain has somehow ground to a halt?

That your ability to concentrate has just evaporated?

Or suddenly notice that your shoulders have somehow ended up around your ears with stress? That the tension in your back is just killing you?

Try Hypnosis! (with Bunny Vreeland of course)

Hypnosis can trigger your natural relaxation response, causing wonderful waves of good hormones and feelings of tranquility to wash through your mind and body.

Imagine having relief on tap - something you could experience whenever you need it that would remove all the stress from your body and return the clarity of your mind. Hypnosis is an effective method of dealing with stress when you cannot get relief through any other methods. Through hypnosis to relieve stress, you can learn many beneficial techniques that will help you cope with ordinary and extraordinary stress and live a happier healthier life. Stress causes many physical and psychological problems, which indirectly cause pain and disease, that can be relieved through hypnosis. It is important to be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress and Hypnosis can help you do this.

Through hypnosis, you learn to distinguish between good and bad stress. Stress is good when it invigorates your life and challenges you to reach the limits of your potential. Stress can be bad when worry about problems or situations causes headaches, insomnia, depression or any other physical problems. Learning how to properly manage stress makes you a happier person and one that others will want to be around. Stress is contagious and if you are down about a problem, you will also bring others down. Through hypnosis, you can also learn to recognize stress is others and how to avoid getting caught up in their problems.

Stress hypnosis teaches you how to relax and stay calm even under the most stressful conditions. It helps you to replace those negative thoughts with positive ones that can help left your spirits. You learn to recognize the things that trigger your stress and this is powerful in helping you to manage the level of stress you feel may be necessary. You can get the help you need to effectively manage stress through stress hypnosis.

Why Does Hypnotherapy Work? - Bunny Vreeland

The ways in which the mind operates in its subconscious mode provide the answer.

It is instructive to note that our autonomic system is in the subconscious. That's the system which tells our hearts to beat and our lungs to breathe. It is because of this we don't have to think (conscious mind), "Oops! Gotta take a breath now!" or "Time for another heart beat!" Fortunately this is all taken care of by our subconscious----- automatically. Everything that is done for our benefit, originates here. Therefore should a hypnotist make an inappropriate suggestion of any kind, it would be rejected by the client.

Years ago I heard a Hypnotherapist explain that if he should ask them in hypnosis to rob every bank in town and bring the money back to him, they wouldn't do it. Our subconscious always has our best interest as its main concern.

It does other things for us, too. We are bombarded by 60,000 stimuli per second every minute of our lives. In one minute we receive 3,600,000 bits of stimuli! One can only speculate what would happen if they would flood our consciousness! Especially when we know that our conscious mind can only be aware of five to seven pieces of information or "clumps" of information at a time.

Emotions and the imagination reside in the subconscious. In an emotional state, we are motivated to proceed in the direction of what we are imagining. Emotion is the fuel of the subconscious while imagination is the language.

Habits by definition are those repetitive behaviors that you do "without thinking." Thinking is a function of the conscious; everything else is in the subconscious. One habit is usually eliminated by replacing it with another. Some habits are easier to eliminate than others and if they are firmly held in the subconscious may require finding the causes and remove them and replace them with healthy behavior.

The subconscious doesn't "think" in the usual way; it reacts. And it can't distinguish between reality and unreality; it absorbs all the information received through the senses as truth.

Generally speaking, if two or more emotions are in conflict, the dominate one wins out over the weaker; imagination wins out over will power; emotions win out over logic; the subconscious wins out over the conscious.

The subconscious can be your master or your greatest ally in your quest for success and self-improvement.

Watch Your Thoughts - by Bunny Vreeland

Watch your thoughts; they become words.

Watch your words; they become actions.

Watch your actions; they become habits.

Watch your habits; they become character.

Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

--Frank Outlaw

Think about this:

Think about your stomach as the size of a large baked potato, because it is!

Put down your fork, spoon, chopsticks or other eating utensil between each bite.
Pick it up only after you have chewed and swallowed and your mouth is empty.
It takes your stomach 20 minutes to get the message to the brain that it is full.

Eat breakfast like a Queen/King, lunch like a Princess/Prince and dinner like a pauper.
80% of all overweight people do not eat breakfast. 80% of all thin people do.

Think loving thoughts about yourself. Be good to yourself. Think of yourself as a baby learning to walk. It takes time and you will fall a few times before you ‘get it right’.

Think about getting a mentor. Why? All successful people (Sports, music, business) have a mentor, coach or guide.

Breathe. When we are stressed, we tend to stop breathing or breathe shallowly.
Take deep breathes all the way into the stomach and diaphragm and exhale through your mouth to de-stress.‘Stressed’ spelled backwards might spell, ‘Desserts’ but the opposite of ‘Stress’ is ‘Relaxation’. That is exactly what Hypnotherapy helps you do: Relax.

Why Should I Quit? - Bunny Vreeland

Quit Smoking - by Bunny Vreeland

If you're a smoker, quitting smoking is the most important step you can take to protect your lungs. It is NEVER too late to quit. Your doctor can help you decide which smoking cessation method will work best for you.

Why should I quit smoking?

You've probably heard how smoking can be harmful to your health and the health of those around you. Here are some ways quitting can be helpful. If you quit, you will:

1. Prolong your life.

2. Improve your health. Smoking increases your risk of lung cancer, throat cancer, a lung disease called emphysema, heart disease, high blood pressure, ulcers, gum disease, and other conditions.

3. Feel healthier. Smoking can cause coughing, poor athletic ability, and sore throats.

4. Look better. Smoking can cause face wrinkles, stained teeth, and
dull skin.

5. Improve your sense of taste and smell.

6. Save money.

How can I quit smoking?

There's no one way to quit smoking that works for everyone. A smoking cessation program may be helpful to you. Ask your doctor about smoking cessation programs in your community. As a board certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, I know that hypnosis can be extremely successful for most clients. Some things that will help you ease the process are:

1. Pick a date to stop smoking, and then get ready for it.
2. Record when and why you smoke. You will come to know what triggers you to smoke.

3. Record what you do when you smoke. Try smoking at different times and different places to break the connections between smoking and certain activities.

4. List your reasons for quitting. Read over the list before and after you quit.

5. Find activities to replace smoking. Be ready to do something else when you want to smoke.

6. Ask yourself, “What do I do when I quit smoking?”

What happens when I quit smoking?

After 20 minutes of not smoking:

1. You stop polluting the air.

2. Your blood pressure and pulse decrease.

3. The temperature of your hands and feet increases.

After 8 hours of not smoking:

1. The carbon monoxide level in your blood returns to normal.

2. Oxygen levels in your blood increase

After 24 hours of not smoking:

1. Your chance of heart attack decreases

After 48 hours of not smoking:

1. Your nerve endings adjust to the absence of nicotine

2. Your ability to taste and smell begins to return

After 72 hours of not smoking:

1. Bronchial tubes relax

After 2 weeks to 3 months of not smoking:

1. Your circulation improves

2. Your exercise tolerance improves

After 1-9 months of not smoking:

1. Coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath decrease

2. Cilia in the lungs regrow, increasing the ability of the lungs to handle mucus, clean the lungs, and reduce infection

3. Your overall energy level increases

After 1 year of not smoking:

1. Your risk of dying from heart disease decreases to half that of a lifelong smoker's risk

2. After 5 years of not smoking:

3. Your risk of dying from lung cancer decreases to half that of a lifelong smoker's risk

After 10 years of not smoking

3. Your risk of dying from lung cancer drops to almost the same rate as a lifelong NON-smoker

2. Your risk of other cancers -- of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas -- decreases

I've tried quitting before, but it didn't work. Why not?

To quit smoking, you must be ready emotionally and mentally. Some people are more ready to quit than others. Look at these five stages of change that people go through to successfully quit smoking.

Stage One: Pre-contemplation. You don't want to quit smoking, but you may try to quit because you feel pressured to quit.

Stage Two: Contemplation. You want to quit someday. You haven't taken steps to quit, but you want to quit.

Stage Three: Preparation. You take small steps to quit such as cutting back on smoking or switching to a lighter brand.

Stage Four: Action. You put a plan for quitting into action. You make changes in your actions and environment to help cope with urges to smoke. You cope with urges to smoke by following the plan and remain smoke-free for six months.

Stage Five: Maintenance. You have not smoked for one year.

Dr Bunny Vreeland - Ventura Hypnotherapist

Dr. Bunny Vreeland

Hi Bunny,
I suffer from anxiety and currently see a physcotherapist. I believe my adult experience has been greatly shaped by my thought processes which generally consist of negative thinking, which only incresases my sense of anxiety. Can hypnotherapy aid in changing my "inner voice" and my subconscious thought process, and bring about a change to more positive expectations and a positive internal experience? My goal is to simply create a more enjoyable life, one which is seemingly less traumatic on a daily basis.
Thanks.

Thank you for your very thought provoking email. You are correct when you say that your way of thinking increases your sense of anxiety. I do a lot of presentations to groups and companies on the subject of 'Self Talk'- how we talk to ourselves. What we say in our own minds. Do you know that we have about 50,000 thoughts a day and 3/4 of them are negative? How can you turn those negatives into positive thoughts? You can practice, practice, practice! Some people can do this all by themselves. Others of us need a coach to help. That's what I do - I coach your subconscious mind to re-think your old, unhealthy habits and negative thoughts. Yes, Hypnotherapy is a great aid in changing the 'inner voice'and creating a healthier and happier thought pattern. Ask yourself these questions: 1. When I make a mistake, what do I say to myself? 2.When I experience symptoms of my disorder, how do I react? Do I feel like a failure? 3.When I look at myself in the mirror, what do I think? 4.Do I like myself? How you think about yourself defines your self-esteem. How you see yourself defines your self-esteem. If you are hard on yourself when you make a mistake, if you don't like what you see in the mirror, if you feel like a failure every time your anxiety relapses, chances are you have low self-esteem. You probably don't like yourself all that well. If you don't like yourself, it may be difficult to believe that recovery from your anxiety disorder is possible. I aqm here to tell you that this can be turned around. I invite you to call me (805-984-1237) and we can discuss this.

Bunny Vreeland - Hypnotherapy and Allergies

Bunny Vreeland, Ventura Hypnotherapist -

I have suffered from allergies my entire adult life. Each Spring I know what I am in for. Sometimes I don't even like to go outside. My symptoms include nasal congestion and blockage, itching, sneezing and watery eyes and nose. I don't like taking the suggested medications, I don't like the way they make me feel. My sister told me that she has heard there has been success with allergies through hypnotherapy? Is it true? I would love some relief.

Thanks
Susan

Susan, Thank you for your question about allergies. Boy! I can really relate to your situation. In fact, 25 years ago I suffered from Migraine Headaches and allergies to the point that I would pass out from the headache pain. At the same time I was seeing an allergist 3 times a week for allergies to grass, dust mites, mold, roses and about 30 other items. I tried various medications and treatments. None of these helped me. What did help me was Hypnotherapy. It completely eliminated all my headaches and allergies and I haven’t had even a hint of any problems, since. No drugs or medicine, either. I was so impressed with the results that I became actively involved with the study hypnotherapy. I was so delighted with what I learned I eventually went on to receive my Ph.D. in Clinical Hypnotherapy. I am a firm believer that Hypnotherapy can substantially reduce or eliminate your allergies. Please call me at 805-984-1237 for more information or to set up an appointment. Trust me, this works!

Thank you for your thought-provoking question. You are correct when you say that your way of thinking and what you say in your mind can increase a sense of anxiety. Self-talk defines self-esteem. We have about 50,000 thoughts a day and often 3/4 of them are negative! So how can you turn those negative thoughts and how we talk to ourselves into positive thoughts? Practice, practice, practice! Yes, Hypnotherapy is a great aid in changing the “inner voice” and creating a healthier and happier thought pattern. Ask yourself these questions: 1. Do I call myself names or think I failed or do I say I am learning and doing better and better? 3.When I look at myself in the mirror, what do I think? Do I say kind things to myself? If you are hard on yourself or if you make a mistake, cut yourself some slack. You are a growing personality and learning to love yourself is part of the lessons. You can turn around anxiety and Hypnosis can make all the difference.

Five Easy Ways to Relax by Bunny Vreeland

Stress is one of the most common causes of illness and disease. Many health problems begin with emotional and physical stress, so it is important relax as often as possible. Here are five simple ways that anyone can use to relax throughout the day:

1. While driving turn off the radio or CD and focus on your breath. It is so easy to spend in the car listening to the radio or getting frustrated by the traffic instead use that time to make you feel better.

2. When working on the computer bring your attention to your shoulders , occasionally, and relax them as you take a deep breath. A sign saying ‘Relax’ on your monitor will help you remember this.

3. Choose a moment during the day when you aren’t as busy, close your eyes as tightly as you can and then relax them completely. This is a good way to wring out all the tension from your eyes.

4. While you are sitting, take a moment and exhale all the air out of your lungs and then take a deep breath in and hold it for about 10 seconds then exhale. Do this 3 times.

5. While you are laying in bed do a progressive relaxation. Start by relaxing your toes and move all the way up through your legs and into your chest relaxing all the different muscles as you go until you get to the top of your head. Repeat as necessary.

You will find that the more you do these things the better you will feel, and your stress levels will quickly diminish. Relaxation is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself because it will affect every area of your life for the better.

Important Notice Regarding Falsified Internet Complaints

As of May 15, 2007 there have been some complaints registered against me on the Internet. I would like to take this opportunity to clear these up. These individual complaints are all being posted by the same person pretending to be many. A person who has made some very serious, false, misleading, slanderous and inaccurate charges against me. For this purpose, we will use the initial ‘N’ for identification of the person being referring to.

Thankfully, many methods are available these days to track malicious individuals such as ‘N’; some of these include IP address tracking, reverse IP lookup, e-mail records, and other investigative tools. To date ‘N’ has been identified and charges are being filed with the Fraud Division of the District Attorney’s office in Ventura County. Some of the charges include Criminal Fraud, identity Theft, and defamation of character, criminal intent and slander.

Because of the nature of this case and pending litigation I have been advised not to release the details. I just want to say that as professionals, we are all vulnerable to these types of slanderous, malicious, and potential damaging accusations.

I hope I have cleared up any matters that may concern you. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Bunny Vreeland: Facts About Hypnotherapy

Demystifying Hypnotherapy by Dr. Bunny Vreeland

The Myths:
* A hypnotist has power over you.
* You can be given posthypnotic suggestions
to do something against your moral code.
* If I go into trance, I will not wake up.
* Only certain people can be hypnotized.
* Hypnosis is anti-religious.
* A posthypnotic state lasts forever.
The Truth:
* No one can be hypnotized against their will.
* A hypnotized person will not do anything against their will.
* You are always in control.
* Hypnosis is not mind control, or even magic.
* Hypnosis is a totally natural recurring state of mind.
* There are no religious connotations associated with Hypnosis.
* The key to hypnosis is repetition and posthypnotic suggestions are usually temporary unless reinforced.
Contrary to popular belief, almost everyone can be hypnotized.
Hypnosis is a state of consciousness one enters and leaves naturally all the time during your day-to day experiences. It feels very much like day dreaming i.e., the state between sleeping and waking. Hypnosis is a guided relaxation. In this state of relaxation you are more open to suggestions. In this state (also called alpha) your brain wave vibration rate slows down, giving you access to your Subconscious Mind. While your Conscious Mind is still completely aware of what is going on the whole time, in this relaxed state of mind, your subconscious mind has the ability to accept information given to it by the hypnotist.
We don't have to think (conscious mind), "Oops! Gotta take a breath now!"
or "Time for another heart beat!" Fortunately this is all taken care of by our subconscious----- automatically. Everything that is done for our benefit, originates here. Therefore should a hypnotist make an inappropriate suggestion of any kind, it would be rejected by the client.
A colleague of mine explains to his clients that if he should ask them in hypnosis to rob every bank in town and bring the money back to him, they wouldn't do it. He points out that if this would work, he'd be a very wealthy hypnotherapist! Which he isn't! Our subconscious always has our best interest as its main concern.

A hypnotherapist is a skilled and trained helping professional who helps you use your own powerful mind to increase motivation or change behavior patterns by inducing a trance state. When hypnotized, your mind is operating in its subconscious mode (referred to by some as the "first gear" of the mind).
Prior to hypnotizing the client, the therapist discusses in the goal the client wants to achieve or the problem s/he wants to resolve in detail. The more the hypnotherapist can share in the experience of the client as s/he experiences it, the more individualized the therapy can be and the greater its impact. The hypnotist also prepares the client to enter hypnosis by explaining just what hypnosis is, how it works and what s/he will experience; if you're starting on a trip it helps to know how and where you're going.
Everyone is susceptible (to one degree or other) to suggestion. Your hypnotherapist will guide you through some exercises that will help determine your degree of suggestibility.
Finally, your hypnotherapist will induce a hypnotic state using individualized methods and techniques based on the results of your suggestibility and the nature of your goal or problem.

How do I choose the hypnotherapist who is right for me?
There is no 100% fool-proof method of selecting the right hypnotherapist, any more than there is a guaranteed way to select the right lawyer, physician, accountant, or plumber.
Major sources for finding a reputable hypnotherapist are: physicians, family or friends, the workplace, the Yellow Pages, lists from professional associations, and The International Registry of Professional Hypnotherapists.

A doctor can refer you to a well-reputed colleague or to his or her own hypnotherapist. But there can be no guarantee that the recommended hynotherapist will be suitable for you. Personality factors, particular
problems or differing ideologies may interfere with rapport. The same is true for referrals by family or friends.
Above all, do not be misled by reputation alone. A great reputation in the therapy field is not always based on competence. Sometimes it is fed by publicity and by professional colleagues who have a personal liking for a particular therapist, especially if he or she devotes a lot of time to their organization's interests. The colleagues may be impressed by that therapist's speeches, self-confidence and self-promotion. But do they personally know any successfully treated clients?
Trust your reaction when talking with a hypnotherapist. Shop around. Spend at least as much time to select a hypnotherapist as you would to choose a car. The best criterion is satisfied clients. Ask the hypnotherapist for written testimonials. Any therapist who has been in business for a reasonable length of time will have letters on file from grateful clients. These will be people who have given permission for their comments to be shown to enquirers. Read and verify them.
And be sure you feel comfortable with the hypnotherapist. If you feel uneasy, it may be a sign that he or she is not good for you.
Key questions to ask yourself are:

+ Does he or she seem interested in my problems?
+ Do I feel welcome?
+ Is the hypnotherapist on time?
+ Do I feel accepted?
+ Does he or she treat me with respect?
+ Does he or she appear hopeful?
+ Does he or she ask a lot about me?
+ Is he or she genuinely interested in me?
+ Does his or her office feel like a haven?
+ Does the hypnotherapist really listen?
+ Does he or she seem knowledgeable?

Key questions to ask the hypnotherapist are:

+ Why should I see you, and not one of your competitors?
+ What experience do you have with my kind of problem?
+ What are your professional qualifications?
+ How long have you been in practice?
+ Do you have references?
+ What hypnotherapy associations do you belong to?
+ How soon can I make an appointment?
+ What are your fees?
+ May I bring someone with me?
+ Do you mind if I tape-record the session?
+ Do you play audiotapes?
+ Will you teach me self-hypnosis?
+ Could you treat my problem without hypnosis?
+ Do you use hypnosis yourself?
Experience is a good criterion. Experience both of life and of hypnotherapy. To ask the hypnotherapist questions relevant to his or her experience is a smart move. Has he or she written books or articles which you could read? Respectful hypnotherapists do not snap their fingers at you, nor speak in a condescending manner. They treat you with the importance you deserve. After all, their business depends on you, and others like you, who seek a better life. Lack of respect also applies to improper questions, suggestions or behavior.
And not just about sex. Impropriety also applies to money and morals. In a truly therapeutic relationship you are heard, accepted, understood and guided to strengthen your inner resources. The hypnotherapist is your ally. Not your friend. Not your business partner. Not your guru. And certainly not your lover.
Above-board hypnotherapists will be delighted that you bring a friend or relative with you. Similarly, they will be pleased you wish to tape-record the session because then you can use the tape at home as reinforcement.
Hypnotherapists with your interests at heart will automatically teach you self- hypnosis. It is part of your becoming self-reliant. At the very least, the hypnotherapist should recommend a book like my Health and Happiness with Hypnosis, which includes explicit instructions on how to hypnotize yourself. Hypnotherapy should be tailored to you, the individual. No two problems, and certainly no two people, however similar, are identical. Settle for nothing less than personalized service.

That individualized approach requires a complete history-taking. It is of course impossible in the short time available for the hypnotherapist to learn everything about you. But he or she should know the details of your presenting problem, your family situation, important life events, health condition, fears, likes and dislikes, etc.
Do not be overly concerned with the per session fee. A very low fee per session may sound attractive, but, in monetary terms, it is the total number of sessions which will count in the end. In human terms, becoming well makes even a high fee seem like a bargain.
Beware of any therapist who has a one-track mind. Some therapists
continually find that the origin of all their clients' problems lies in childhood
sexual abuse; others find that all their clients' problems arise from past lives;
others find that all their clients' problems arise from birth trauma, etc., etc.
Not all of life's distresses arise from one trauma, or indeed, from any trauma. Human beings are far too complex and life, fortunately, is far too rich, for there to be one single cause of everyone's troubles. Two questions that concern most people are: How many sessions will it take?
And What is your success rate?
No one can know in advance how many sessions your problem will take to resolve. There are far too many variables, including: the personalities of you
and the hypnotherapist, your talent for hypnosis, whether you really want to shed the problem, what other issues may surface, etc.
Of course, you could specify a certain number of sessions. And some psychotherapists who use hypnosis do set a fixed number of sessions. The pressure of this deadline approach sometimes helps but there can be no guarantee.
Be assured, however, that hypnosis usually speeds up the therapeutic process. What might take months or years of regular psychotherapy can usually be accomplished in weeks with hypnotherapy.
To ask a hypnotherapist his or her success rate is a meaningless question.
Who would tell you her success rate is 3%? In any case, should the
hypnotherapist's rate be 95%, this says nothing about your chances of success. For many different reasons you may fall into the 5%.
For unhealthy habits such as smoking, hypnotherapy is 100% successful for those who really want to change.

A person using hypnosis should practice within his or her professional competence. Thus a dentist who relaxes her dental patients with hypnosis has no business engaging in psychotherapy, unless she has also been trained in that field. Conversely, a physician must be involved when a medical concern, such as pain, is being tackled.
Responsible therapists use hypnosis as a tool. Since it is not in itself a therapy, nor is it a cure-all, you are in better hands if the hypnotherapist is also able to deal with your problem without hypnosis.
Thus, if you are consulting a physician who is using hypnosis to help you control pain, presumably she will have pharmaceutical alternatives with which to help you should the hypnotherapy not work well. But if the doctor is using hypnosis to help you deal better with a disastrous relationship, she is helpless if the hypnotherapy does not work well - unless she has taken special training in couples counseling.
Licensing and governmental regulation over who is allowed to practice hypnotherapy vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Many states and provinces, such as Quebec, have no rules whatever. Others are very stringent.
Remember, to find the right hypnotherapist for yourself, first do your homework about credentials and experience and then -- trust your instincts.

Bunny Vreeland: Hypnosis - Valium Substitute?

Hypnosis has long been known for it's ability to decrease the sensation of pain and was used by Dr James Esdaile back in the 19th century to perform surgical operations, dramatically reducing the mortality rates in the hospital where he was employed.

With the discovery of ether and other analgesics hypnosis was abandoned because of the time taken produce the desired effect. Money was invested in drugs instead of using nature's natural remedy to counteract painful sensations.

A recent study of 80 cancer patients aged between 6 and 16 established that patients receiving hypnosis from a therapist reported less pain, anxiety and distress than others who received only standard hospital care whilst undergoing painful spinal cord punctures.

An earlier review that was published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics in June 2004 concluded that there was enough positive evidence to warrant larger scale investigations of the use of hypnosis in children with cancer.

In a small trial of adult patients undergoing angioplasty, an invasive heart procedure, it was also found that the sedative effect of hypnosis was slightly better than that of the drug diazepam (Valium). This finding is supported by other clinical trials whereby hypnosis has enabled adult patients to gain control over other forms of pain such as that associated with gastrointestinal problems, accelerated healing of bone fractures and surgical wounds, skin problems and weight control.

The latest guidelines from the U.S. Headache Consortium, a coalition of seven medical groups, include hypnosis among the non-drug measures most proven to help prevent headaches.

Bunny Vreeland: Fibromyalgia and Hypnotherapy

Fibromyalgia, pronounced feye-bro-my-Al-juh, is a collection of symptoms characterized by muscle pain, stiffness and fatigue. It is called a syndrome rather than a disease because there is not specific test that confirms or denies its existence. There is no known cause or cure. Rather, it is a confusing and frustrating collection of symptoms, which come and go and vary in intensity. The chief symptom of Fibromyalgia is widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, stiffness, fatigue and non-restorative sleep.

While it is not life threatening, it completely re-defines the patient’s quality of life. Fibromyalgia can be as debilitating as rheumatoid arthritis. The pain is diffuse and widespread. Patients with Fibromyalgia (FMS) report that they ache all over. FMS patients are tired all the time. FMS patients sleep poorly and are stiff when they wake up or sit for extended periods of time. It can be particularly frustrating because the sufferer appears so healthy and normal on the outside and feels so miserable on the inside.

FMS has no known cause and affects 5%-10% of the population. Eight times more women than men are affected by Fibromyalgia and it strikes people of all ages.

Fibromyalgia has been called several names, including fibrositis, myofibrositis or fibromyositis. These are all inaccurate terms. The ‘itis’ at the end of the word indicates an inflammation but there is no inflammatory process in FMS. The suffix, ‘myalgia’ means muscle pain and is the accurate term for this condition. It is sometimes referred to as psychogenic rheumatism.

Traditional treatments aim at improving the quality of sleep and reducing pain. Recent research confirms that a multidisciplinary approach to treating FMS provides the greatest relief from symptoms and the best prognosis. This approach includes improving the quality of sleep, proper nutrition, physical conditioning, deep relaxation (hypnotherapy) and positive mental imagery (hypnotherapy). By combining therapies, the patient can frequently return to a healthier state and a more active lifestyle.

In one study published in the Journal of Rheumatology, 40 Fibromyalgia patients were randomly assigned to treatment with either hypnotherapy or physical therapy for 12 weeks and followed up at 24 weeks. The patients in the hypnotherapy group showed a significantly better outcome with respect to pain reduction, fatigue on awakening, and sleep patterns. In addition the patients treated with hypnotherapy showed a significant improvement in their overall levels of discomfort.

Bunny Vreeland: Control Pain With Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy for Pain Management has no side effects, is very relaxing and, for some people, may replace medication completely. Ask your Doctor about it!

Almost all pain will respond to Hypnotherapy. Pain from cancer-arthritis-amputations-migraines-injury and other conditions…can be reduced by hypnotherapy. Of course, it takes repetition and the more you use it the better it works for you. You can’t expect to be hypnotized once and have your back pain disappear for the rest of your life. But with practice you can achieve remarkable results.

Virtually everyone suffers from chronic or acute pain at some time in his or her life. Migraine headaches, back pain, chronic pain from illness or injury and pain associated with surgery, cancer and other medical treatments.

For years I suffered from migraine headaches and allergies. I went to many doctors who prescribed a lot of different drugs that made me feel so groggy I couldn’t function. I couldn’t work. Through the use of hypnotherapy, I was able to reprogram myself to make the symptoms disappear. I haven’t had a migraine or allergic reaction for over 25 years.

Many people experiencing pain turn to medication…either over the counter medications or prescriptions…or even illegal drugs to relieve their pain. Sometimes the medication helps. But, sometimes the side effects are almost as bad as the pain itself. And, many people just don’t want to take drugs.

Advantages to Hypnotherapy. Today more and more people suffering with chronic pain are turning to Hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy, along with medical treatment, has several advantages in pain management. Hypnotherapy requires no drugs. It has no harmful side effects. It is not addicting. It is safe for adults and children.

Hypnotherapy can be used as part of a total pain management program. Of course, you should have your condition diagnosed by a qualified physician before using Hypnotherapy to control your pain.

Hypnotherapy produces deep relaxation that can help relieve pain.

Some painful conditions, such as headaches, are often aggravated by stress and can be eased by relaxation alone. Even those conditions that are not directly stress related can often be helped with Hypnotherapy.

Bunny Vreeland: Hypnotherapy & Insomnia

Extensive lack of sleep can impair memory and judgment, cause mood disorders, make it difficult to learn new things or perform daily tasks and reduce the ability of the immune system to prevent illness. Sleeping pills should not be used long term.

Hypnosis is the perfect way to establish the pattern of deep sleep.

Insomnia

In our rapidly changing, stress filled world, Insomnia has become an epidemic. Half of all adults now complain of trouble sleeping, up from one-third just a few years ago. At least 30 million adults endure the stress of severe chronic Insomnia.

Poor sleep impairs our ability to react creatively and appropriately to situations and has dramatically negative effect on a person's physical health. It leaves someone tired, anxious and feeling emotionally unstable.

Causes

Poor sleep patterns can be triggered by a number of factors including worry, depression or simply noise. In order to go to sleep, we need to relax, so if someone is constantly worrying they will prevent the natural process of sleep. People suffering from depression will often over-dream, resulting in exhaustion the next day. In order to compensate for this, the body will sometimes wake them up before too much dreaming has taken place, a problem that is called early-morning-waking syndrome. If someone has suffered disturbed sleep for a while, they can become anxious in advance about whether or not they will have a good night's sleep, which can lead to the problem continuing even after the initial cause has disappeared.

Solutions

Sleeping pills will put you to sleep but they also inhibit deep sleep and REM, reducing the quality of the sleep. Furthermore, the body develops a tolerance to them, necessitating larger and larger doses to have an effect. For these reasons, they should only be viewed as a short-term solution to specific situations.

Your subconscious controls your sleep patterns and has a memory for virtually everything you do, and that includes a memory for nice, deep, restful sleep. Hypnosis is indeed very relaxing, making sleep come easier and has no harmful side effects. It is also a good choice for helping to "re-learn" healthy sleeping patterns of behavior and disconnects an overactive intellect. With the use of Hypnotherapy and Self-Hypnosis you can experience significantly improved sleep, mood, and energy. By learning to successfully use the techniques of self-hypnosis, you will take control of your sleep, mind, and body.

You will be empowered by the realization that the key to conquering insomnia resides within you. Therefore, you will boost your confidence in your personal power and strengthen your sense of self-esteem, which is fundamental to optimal health and well-being.
